คำบุพบทคือคำที่ใช้เชื่อมคำนาม,คำสรรพนาม,หรือวลีเข้าด้วยกัน โดยคำหรือวลีที่อยู่หลังบุพบทจะถูกเรียกว่า "กรรมตามหลังบุพบท" คำบุพบทจะใช้เพื่อแสดงว่าคำหรือวลีที่อยู่หลังบุพบทนั้นมีความสัมพันธ์กับส่วนอื่นๆอย่างไรในประโยค เช่น
Tom and James are in the room. ทอมและเจมส์อยู่ในห้อง
Tom and James เป็นคำนาม ทำหน้าที่เป็นประธานของประโยค
are เป็นคำกริยา
in เป็นคำบุพบท ซึ่งแสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง Tom and Jame กับ ห้อง
the room เป็นคำนาม ทำหน้าที่เติมเต็มประโยคให้สมบูรณ์
ซึ่งเราจะแบ่งบุพบทในภาษาอังกฤษเป็น 3 หมวดใหญ่ ได้แก่
1. บุพบทบอกเวลา (Prepositions of time)
คำบุพบทเกี่ยวกับเวลา หมายถึง คำบุพบทที่บอกกาลเวลา เช่น after, before, between, during, at, by, from, until, to, in, on, within
ตัวอย่าง
- Mother will arrive by 5 o’clock.
- The school will be open from November.
- We will do homework until midnight.
- They lived with me from April to July.
- I often watch television in the evening.
- I was born in 1986.
2. บุพบทบอกสถานที่ (Prepositions of Places)
คำบุพบทเกี่ยวกับสถานที่ หมายถึง คำบุพบทที่บอกตำแหน่งแหล่งที่ว่าสิ่งนั้นๆอยู่ที่ไหน เช่น across, above, below, over, under,before, after, around, between, among, at, from, to, behind, by, near, beside, on, in, outside, inside, into

- Our school is across the temple.
- The light is above the gate.
- The plane is flying below the clouds.
- The light is over the door.
- The ruler is under the carpet.
- Tom is walking before John.
- The cat ran after the mouse.
3. บุพบทลูกผสม คือบอกสถานที่และทิศทางในเวลาเดียว เช่น about, wihtout, with
